IT’S
A SMALL WORLD From the August 1999 Education for Development Newsletter - Translated from Thai Ban Tung Tae is the name of a village which is similar to other villages in northeast Thailand. Most northeast villages have many poor and underprivileged children. Asadaporn is one of those poor children , her family could not afford for her to continue study in junior high school but luckily Asadaporn got a scholarship from The Education For Development Foundation which enabled her to complete high school. After finishing high school, Asadaporn would like to continue at university level to get at least one degree. Asadaporn tried her best to make her dream come true and she thought of going to work in Bangkok. Fortunately she got a job as an employee of one big department store, she adjusted her time very well in both working and studying. The life of a girl in Bangkok was not easy, she needed to be patient with everything, she had to spare one part of her salary for her tuition fees and another to send to her parents. In 1997, after the Thai economic crisis, Asadaporn’s office also faced with this crisis but she was not affected immediately like some of her friends. However Asadaporn lived under tension because of fear of unemployment. Asadaporn’s life was not so happy as usual when she got a negative news from her parents. Her parents were not so healthy and there was nobody at home to take care of them. As a grateful child, Asadaporn decided to quit her job and go home. Life in the city and in rural areas was quite similar in term of jobs, Asadaporn told herself. She didn’t want to give up, she tried to find a new job which she could earn the same amount of income. As a result, a small project was started by Asadaporn. She bought 30 small chicken and 400 mushrooms to grow and she started to become a farmer. Within 15 days ,she could earn money from the mushrooms. Currently, Asadaporn studies at home whenever she is free from work because she has transferred her course to Ramkamhaeng university , Amnatcharoen branch. Asadaporn realizes that many neighbors are poor so she thinks of An Income Generating Project in the village. She starts her project as a leader by giving them some ideas and take initiative to begin the project and let them follow it up. Asadaporn wants to teach these poor neighbors to understand that poor people will not be poor forever if people give themselve a chance to begin something by which they can earn money. Today Asadaporn is very happy she can be the one who contributes in some small way to make a better society. This true story will be ended with Asadaporn’s thought ” one drop of water cannot make whole tree fresh but if we give water every day it can make the tree fresh even it’s only one drop”. To Minsai
