How you can help Thai children

Each additional year a child attends school, the long term benefits for that child and his or her community increase dramatically. Education is what enables families and their villages to survive and prosper. An educated child becomes a health worker, a teacher, a leader. As a scholarship donor, you have the opportunity to effect change on a personal level as you provide an immediate, life-changing opportunity for your student. On a global level, your scholarship helps strengthen not only your student's community, but communities worldwide.

Through the Darunee Scholarship Program, you are matched directly with a student who would otherwise be unable to attend school. Currently, these students are primarily middle school students in Thailand, although expansion of the program to other areas is already underway. Your donation of $60 or $100 supports a large part of one student's education for one year. You will receive a biography and photograph of the student, as well as a yearly report. You'll be provided with your student's address; we encourage you to exchange letters.

The scholarship student receives 1500 baht (Thai unit of currency), and money cannot be withdrawn without the signature of the student and his or her teacher. This ensures that the money is used only for educational purposes - uniforms, books, supplies, shoes, and school activities. There is a strict hierarchy of accountability from this office through the Bangkok office and to the provincial and village level to ensure appropriate use of all funds. Any surplus from changes in the exchange rate will be used for income generating programs.

Since 1988, donors in Japan and Thailand have provided, through Minsai Center and the Education for Development Foundation, over 100,000 scholarships to children who need them. Darunee Fund is pleased and proud to offer donors outside these countries the opportunity to join in this global effort to make education available for every child.

Darunee Scholarship Donation

$60 per year will support one child, and your donation is tax deductible.  $100 per year will support one child and help build a community.  There are several types of scholarships:

Standard: This provides a scholarship for one student as well as support for schools and economic development in rural Thailand.

  • A type: A one-time tax deductible donation to provide a scholarship for three years, ensuring the child's opportunity to complete middle school ($300).
  • B type: An annual tax deductible donation of the one-year scholarship for three years. This allows the donor to support the same student throughout his or her middle school years. The donation amount is spread over a three-year period ($100 donation each year for three years).
  • C-type: A one-time tax deductible donation of a one-year scholarship ($100)

Special Option (s type): This provides a scholarship for one student. This category is possible because of the high value of the US dollar to Thai baht.

  • A-s type: A one-time tax deductible donation to provide a scholarship for three years, ensuring the child's opportunity to complete middle school ($180).
  • B-s type: An annual tax deductible donation of the one-year scholarship for three years. This allows the donor to support the same student throughout his or her middle school years. The donation amount is spread over a three-year period ($60 donation each year for three years).
  • C-s type: A one-time tax deductible donation of a one-year scholarship ($60)

When we receive your donation, we will forward your name and the scholarship amount to Thailand. The screening process in the schools takes place from November to April, and the final matching between students and donors occurs in April. Donations must be received by March 15th to be used in May. The school year begins in May in Thailand, and in June and July the matching information is sent to our office. You will receive the packet of information describing your student by August. In addition, you will receive regular newsletters updating you on the scholarship program and other activities of the Foundation.
