Darunee Newsletter No. 19 Excerpt from Hanako West Magazine July 1999 "DARUNEE SCHOLARSHIP: FOR 10,000 YEN ($100) A YEAR, HELPING THAI CHILDREN TO RECEIVE EDUCATION, BETTER CHANCES FOR FUTURE" Ms. Naoko Shirai works for Daihatu Industry Co., Ltd. She has been concerned with environmental issues and poverty since she was young. With a busy schedule she cannot spare time for volunteer work, so she opted to give a donation instead. "I first heard of this program from my mother. I have loved Thailand since the first time I visited. In the northeastern region, many children are sent to work away from home. Sometimes, it is said, they are sold for money. By giving them an education, we hope the children will have new opportunities in their lives." Ms. Shirai is presently supporting three girls. |
