Donor scholarship and selection processIn partnership with The Education for Development Foundation in Bangkok, as well as Minsai Center Japan in Tokyo, the donor scholarship and selection process is designed to ensure that donations reach students with the greatest need throughout nineteen provinces of northeast Thailand. The scholarship contributions help students who might otherwise find the circumstances impossible to continue their education.
Fund Transfer The
standard donation of $100 for each school year covers a student’s scholarship
as well as additional support for schools and
rural economic development projects.
A small portion allows Darunee Fund and The Education for
Development Foundation (EDF) to administer the scholarship process.
The percentage of the donation used for rural economic development projects, additional school support, and administrative costs is dependent on the current exchange rate of the Thai baht to the U.S. dollar. This ensures that the scholarship student is always awarded the full scholarship of 1500 baht for each school year.
The contribution is sent to EDF, where it is distributed to the appropriate EDF Provincial Committee. A small percentage of the standard donation is sent from the main EDF office to support the rural economic development projects. The EDF Provincial Committees then send the donation to a local school.
The local school transfers 1500 baht to a specific student account and uses the remainder for additional school support, such as teacher training.
Once a student account has been created, funds can be withdrawn only with the signatures of both the student and the student’s guidance teacher. This ensures the scholarship money is used only for the individual student’s educational needs.
Due to the present economic conditions and the resulting exchange rate, we are able to continue offering the special donation option. The special donation option of $60 for each school year covers the student’s scholarship and some of the administrative expenses at Darunee Fund and EDF. Funds from the special donation option are distributed similarly with the exception that no additional funds are available for rural economic development pro-jects or local school support.
Student Selection
The student selection process begins at the local level to ensure that the scholarships are awarded to those who need them most in each province. This enables us to keep administrative costs to a minimum. Local teachers nominate children considered to be most in need of scholarship funding to continue schooling. The nominees are screened by District Committees to verify need and are screened again at the provincial level to ensure that the scholarships are awarded according to all scholarship guidelines.
Scholarship Matching
In the final stage, EDF matches eligible students with available scholarships. Once EDF matches a student to the scholarship, the donor receives a short biography and picture of the sponsored student. The donor also receives a yearly report of the student and the student’s address. We encourage donors to write their students.
