ISAN - Northeast Thailand

Please go to http://www.thailand.com/travel/map/map.htm for detailed maps of the provinces.  Courtesy of www. thailand.com.

The northeastern provinces of Thailand, known as the Isan Region, are among the most populated areas in the country but also the poorest economically. In the past, due to unequal distribution of income, people were forced to migrate to Bangkok hoping to find work. With the economic crisis of 1997, however, jobs were lost and many Isan people returned to their villages. We believe it is important to promote income generating activities in the Isan region where employment is extremely limited. One way to help development in the region is to ensure that the local children have the opportunity to continue their education, especially from secondary school.

Ten years ago, at the invitation of Thai students actively involved in international education, Mr. Terumasa Akio, Director of Minsai Center in Japan and President of Asiamerica Foundation / Darunee Fund in the U.S., visited Isan and by chance met little Darunee. He was tremendously impressed by her strong desire for education, even at the age of seven. This meeting served as the inspiration for the Darunee Scholarship program. The name symbolizes our hope that many children will have the opportunity to obtain the education so desperately desired. The scholarships provide a very real chance for a better life not only for Darunee but for the entire generation she represents. Today, Minsai Center and the Education for Development Foundation provides scholarships to students in all 19 provinces in northeast Thailand. From 1992 to 1998, we have been able to provide scholarships so that more than 14,500 children every year may continue their education.
